Washington, DC, formally the District of Columbia, is the capital of the United States. The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the preexisting settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of President George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. Washington DC is a small area with lots of history, sightseeing, and things to do. If you are a history buff, then while vacationing in Washington DC, you should visit The National Mall. The National mall is a 2 mile long area of a unique National Park willed with an intense concentration of monuments, memorials, museums, and monumental government buildings. Pretty much everything in the Mall area is within walking distance from each other, so you could spend a day touring around the National Mall and also getting some exercise. Washington DC is comprised of four districts that each offer different attractions.
